Who’s sitting at your table?
“If you are the smartest person at the table, invite smarter people to sit with you.”
– S. Edwards
Recently having a conversation with some friends and I posed this quote to gauge other’s opinions. “If you are the smartest person at the table, invite smarter people to sit with you.” Some were familiar with the statement but had heard it in a different form, some had never thought about it so their facial expression seemed perplexed and others had to ponder what position at the table did they occupy, if a seat at all for that matter. We all immediately laughed but then my amusement became stagnant as I also had to ponder, where was my seat and who was sitting with me?
I like to think of myself as a very creative person with an entrepreneurial spirit, I am college educated, with a divine way of thinking. I also had heard the saying yet it seemed I really hadn’t taken any heed to the fruit of the actual meaning. So at that moment, I took an assessment of the individuals who were standing before me. Then I took an assessment of the individuals I interacted with as a majority. And finally, I thought about those I admired and looked up to. To say the least, I think it’s time to get up from the table and find a new seat.
Here are a few pointers when sitting down at the table next time:
- Are you the smartest person at the table?
- Do you have like minds sitting with you?
- Do they excel to want more than what’s at the table currently?
- Is there room at the table for other smart people?
- What does being “smart” actually mean to you?
“I AM thankful for attracting the exact type of people I want & need around me: creative minds with amazing commitment to their dreams.”
